Developing Golf Power and Flexibility

By: Rick McCrery

Introduction | Task | Resources | Procedure | Evaluation | Conclusion

Introduction:

You are the coach of the golf team. You notice that the other teams seem to hit the ball longer off the tee. You see the advantage that the other teams have by hitting such long shots off the tee.

The Task:

  • Develop a three-week weight training and flexibility program for your players that will increase their shot power.

The Procedure:

Research the muscles used in the gold swing. Find out what weight exercises work with the muscles that are used in the golf swing. Put together a weight and flexibility program for your players. The program should include a three-week day-by-day breakdown of what exercises the players will be doing each day.

Evaluation:

Your project will be graded using an evaluation rubric. The rubric will consist of the following criteria. Each group member will need to complete an evaluation for their participation in the project as well as the participation of the other members in their group. Next, each group will need to submit a portfolio containing the following information: Research materials used to develop your weight program, the three-week weight and flexibility program, and an explanation on how your program will increase swing power.

Conclusion:

  1. How did your group decide what muscles were most important to the golf swing?
  2. How did your group decide on the number of reps in your weight program?
  3. How did your group weigh the importance of flexibility in your program?
  4. How did your group implement flexibility training into your program?
  5. What could be a down side of building muscle in golf?
