The Wonderful World of Football Created by Shawn Larkin

Introduction

One day Lamar Hunt, architect of the AFL and owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, came across his daughter's Super Ball and was given the inspiration for the name of the championship game between the upstart American Football League and the old-guard National Football League.

"Why not," he wondered, "call our championship game the Super Bowl?"

The name caught on quickly and thus, an American tradition was born.

The first of these "Super" contests pitted Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers (13-2) against Hank Stram's Chiefs (12-2-1) and was played before 61,946 fans in Los Angeles' 100,000-seat Memorial Coliseum. The television audience for this game is estimated to have been approximately 60 million viewers.

You have just become interested in the wonderful game of football and you want to learn more about this great sport. Have you ever wondered: Where did the game of football come from?  What is the history of your favorite team?  Who is your favorite player?  What are some of the accomplishments that your player has achieved?  What are the different positions within a football organization. Well here is your chance to find out.

Task

You have just become a journalist, sports historian, scout, or even a player.

Your task will be to choose one of the following:

1.      Find out about the history of the game of football, where is originated from, when it became popular in the US. When did the leagues change?  In the end you will have a full understanding of history of the game of football and be able to share your knowledge with your friends.

2.      Choose your favorite team; find out when the team came into existence, player history, city moves, owner information.  (An older team may be more interesting then a newly acquired team).  The end result will be a vast knowledge of you favorite teams’ hardships and achievements.

3.      Choose your favorite player.  Find out stats on him, where he was born, what schools he attended, what he is doing now, on and off the field.  What was his starting salary, what is he getting paid now etc…The end result will be a great knowledge of your favorite players background and how good a person he is or the lack of his humanity.

4.      Choose a position in football, (ex. Fullback).  What is the main purpose of this position has it changed over the years.  What is the history of the position, where did the name originate from, how much did a player in this position receive in salary in the past, how much do they get now.  Who are some high profile players who play this position?
