Introduction

Ms. Thompson, a first year physical education teacher at Highlands High School, told her class that they would begin a Fitness and Conditioning Unit on Monday. To her surprise she heard a class full of moans and groans. "Oh no, I hate to run," complained Carol. "That’s all we ever do in a Fitness unit is run." Pretty soon the entire class was grumbling about all the running they thought they were going to do during the next week. Ms. Thompson began to laugh. "Why are you laughing?" one of the students asked. "Is that what you all think Fitness is about? Running?" asked Ms. Thompson. "Uh huh," was the response from the class. "Okay, Okay," said Ms. Thompson, trying to calm down her class. "How about if I allow you to make up your own physical fitness activities as part of the fitness unit?" Groans changed to smiles as students headed to the locker room to change.

Running is what many of us think of when we hear the words, physical fitness. If you could design YOUR OWN fitness activities instead of Ms. Thompson, what would you do? What activities would you play? Would you run all the time? What information would you need to know in order to plan your fitness schedule? How would you know if you improved or met your goals? This WebQuest will help you answer these questions.

Task

Your task for this project is to review basic fitness concepts, design your own fitness activities, then try them out during a fitness and conditioning unit in class. The tasks are to be done with a partner or small group; however, you will each complete your own Quest To Be Fit materials. Listed below is a brief summary of the four Quest To Be Fit tasks:

1.  Gain health and fitness knowledge by completing information sheets

2.  Pre-test your fitness levels

3.  Create a fitness plan and do it

4.  Re-test your fitness levels (Post-tests)

Process

There are four tasks to be completed for your Quest To Be Fit. Part of Task One is to be done individually. Do the remaining tasks of your Personal Fitness Quest with a partner. The tasks are designed to help you plan a personal fitness and conditioning unit that is fun to do. Each task must be completed and checked off by your teacher before going to the next task. Make sure to check the Evaluation Criteria for Quest To Be Fit before you begin. Then, begin with Task 1 and follow all directions.

TASK 1 - Review Basic Physical Fitness Concepts

Complete Part A individually, then work with your partner to do Part B.

PART A: General Knowledge

ü Click on  General Knowledge to get the form you will need to complete.

ü Use the resource links found within the Knowledge Sheet to find answers to each

question on the form.

ü Complete and print out the entire document and turn it in or e-mail the document

as an attachment to your teacher.

PART B: Know It to Do It

ü Complete this part with your partner. Decide what sections each person will do. Each of you will turn in a completed Know It to Do It sheet and may copy sections done by your partner.

ü Click on  Know It To Do It  to get the form you will need to complete.

ü Use the Resource links found within the Knowledge Sheet to find answers to each

Question on the form.

ü Complete and print out the entire document and turn it in or e-mail the document as an attachment to your teacher.

Parts A & B must be checked off by your teacher before beginning Task 2.

TASK 2 - Personal Fitness Profile

Each person is to complete a Personal Fitness Profile; however, you may work with your partner to accomplish the tasks. During class you will determine your before (Pre) fitness scores. After you complete all of the pre tests, determine your goals for improvement for each area. You will determine your after (post) fitness scores at the end of your Fitness unit. Click on  Personal Fitness Profile  and get a copy of the form to use for this task. Once you have completed Task 2, continue on to Task 3.

TASK 3 – Plan It and Do It

Now it’s time to make your own physical fitness plan and do it! Each person is to complete a Plan IT and Do It form; however, you may work with your partner to accomplish the tasks. Click on  Plan It and Do It  to get a copy of the form, fill it out, and begin your activities. The form is to be used for each week of your fitness unit. Once you have completed your fitness unit, it’s time to post test in Task 4.

TASK 4 Post Test to determine if you met your fitness goals

Use the Fitness Profile form you partially completed from Task 2 to complete this last task. Re-test the various fitness tests found on the form, record your scores, then determine if you met your fitness goals. Circle Yes to indicate you met your goal or No, you did not reach your intended fitness goal. Finish your Quest to Be Fit by completing a final wrap-up of your Quest To Be Fit experience. Go to the Conclusion to complete your quest.
