University of Idaho President Nellis on STEM (Friday Letter Jan 29 2010)

"One of the most pressing issues in our nation today is the need to expand education in science, technology, engineering and math. It is through STEM education that the U.S. will retain its world leadership in science and technology. The University of Idaho already is making a major contribution in this arena. Nearly one-third of the degrees the University awarded in the 2008-09 academic year were in STEM areas. This compares with about one-quarter of all degrees awarded by our western U.S. peer institutions and 12 percent for other Idaho institutions."

United States President Obama launches STEM initiatives (eSchool News Nov 29 2009)

"Obama identified three overarching priorities for STEM education: increasing STEM literacy so all students can think critically in these subject areas; improving the quality of math and science teaching so American students no longer are outperformed by those in other nations; and expanding STEM education and career opportunities for underrepresented groups, including women and minorities."
