Presidents's Message - Mike McNamee
Welcome to this our first dual-edition of the IAPS newsletter. Thanks to those of you who responded to our request to receive the newsletter by electronic format. To those of you who were merely a little too busy, well it's not too late. Email the Newsletter editor at sstoll@uidaho.edu.
This is my first newsletter as President and I have some thanks to offer. First, the 2000 IAPS Conference in Australia was a big success. The range and quality of papers presented and the resultant discussion was excellent. A very big thanks, then, to Dennis Hemphill and the crew for their excellent efforts. The program of the conference caught the eye of the Editor of Applied and Professional Ethics. He is very interested in putting a collection together of material that was presented there -those of you, that is, who have not already submitted work to the Journal of Philosophy of Sport. If you would like to hear more, please contact me or Sheryle Drewe Dixon (sheryledixon@yahoo.ca).
Next in line, and hard on the heels of the conference, was the matter of the election to office for IAPS. A list of the sucessful candidates is listed below.
President-Elect: Nicholas Dixon, Professor and Chair of Philosophy at Alma College. USA. Email: dixon@alma.edu
Journal Editor: R. Scott Kretchmar, Professor of Exercise and Sport Science (Kinesiology) at Pennsylvania State University. USA. Email: rsk1@psu.edu
Sec-Treasurer: Alun Hardman, Field Chair, Sports Education, Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education, United Kingdom. Email: ahardman@chelt.ac.uk
Honors & Awards: John Charles, Professor and Chair of Department of Kinesiology, The College of William and Mary. USA. Email: jmchar@am.edu
Executive Committee: Heather Reid, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Morningside College, USA. Email: reid@morningside.edu & Karin Volkwein, Professor of Physical Education, Westchester University, USA. Email kvolkwein@wcupa.edu
May I thank all those officers who worked so hard for IAPS last year and welcome those who will contribute to the life of the Association this year. In particular, I welcome Nicholas Dixon as the President-Elect. Nick will be the Program Chair for our 2001 Conference in Williamsburg, Va. (See below for the Call for Papers). Should you need information or want to discuss different presentation formats or topics please feel free to contact him at dixon@alma.edu.
My thanks, in advance, to John Charles for all his preparation for the upcoming conference. (See below for article on Conference). Finally, thanks to Bob Simon for his organizational efforts in the election and to those members who kindly stood for election to serve our community. If I may be of service to you as President please feel free to contact me. My best wishes to all of you then for the festive season and a happy and healthy new year. Mike - MmcNamee@chelt.ac.uk
Mike McNamee is with Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education , UK.
Very few of our members have paid their dues for the 2000-2001 year. But don't be dismayed, this is not your fault but ours. We have had some major mishaps in our change over from one officer to another and the details and problems we have had as we try to work out the governance of an international organization. But HELP!! We can't continue on with no money so here is the rub. Please pay your dues. The fees have increased, what's new. Seems like everything goes up. Why the increase? I don't really know, I know I should!! You're probably wondering why I don't know; I didn't make it to Australia to the meeting. But I bet it has to do with those pesky mailing costs of the Journal. Have you checked out the price to mail anything? Anyhow, pull out the check book and pay the fees. The membership form enclosed gives the addresses of the agents around the globe so you can send funds right to them. Don't know if you are a member? Or if you are paid? I have the answer for you. Just check out the web site at http://www.its.uidaho.edu/iaps You'll see a section for 2000-01 members. Not too many names (about 10) there, and mine isn't included either. So I better get hopping and get it done...you too. I'm taking out my checkbook, are you?
Newsletter ItemsHave any items you would like to have included in the IAPS Newsletter? Any thoughts on some pressing issue or techniques that all of us might benefit from? Type it up and send it the Editor. We are always looking for new and innovative concepts to include. So fire away, sstoll@uidaho.edu.

ICSSPE
(Editor's note: IAPS is an association member of ICSSPE, thanks to the hard work of Karin Volkwein. Karin has served as our liaison to ICSSPE for about five years. Well done, Karin. Below find an introductory piece from ICSSPE telling us who they are, what they do, and why we should be a member).
Opens the Door to the International Sport Science Community
Specialization vs. globalization. The sport science community is currently spread between these two extremes: Research and applications range from ground-breaking discoveries at the cellular level to international, multi-disciplinary initiatives and resources. The common interest in physical activity, physical education and sport is clear, but a stronger sport science network, linking the disciplines and research centres world-wide will ensure effective impact and development for the field as a whole.
The International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) is a platform for communication and collaboration between a wide range of sport science organizations. Recognizing the need to strengthen communication between sport science disciplines and sport and physical education organizations, ICSSPE facilitates the flow of sport science information; promotes, stimulates and co-ordinates scientific research in the field of physical education and sport; and acts as a unified voice for the sport science community.
Links within the sport science community:
Unlike IAPS, ICSSPE members are not individual sport scientists, but rather organizations, federations and research institutes. Currently over 220 member organizations in 65 countries world-wide represent university sport science departments, national sport and physical education bodies (such as Sport Ministries, National Olympic Committees and NGO's) and also international organizations, such as IAPS. Specific services relevant to IAPS members are outlined below.

At the international level, ICSSPE plays an important role as an advisor to UNESCO in sport science and physical education. The Council has formal associate relations with UNESCO, the highest status granted to a non-governmental organisation. This prestigious status not only opens up many opportunities for ICSSPE as a whole, but the status is also valid for each ICSSPE member. This means that members, including IAPS, may work with the ICSSPE Executive Office or the respective UNESCO National Commission to be involved in UNESCO's programs or obtain support for specific initiatives.
Additionally, ICSSPE is a recognized organization of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and works with IOC representatives to determine research agendas, present research proposals and co-ordinate plans for the Pre-Olympic Scientific Congresses held every 4 years. In the area of health and physical activity, ICSSPE collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and is a member of the International Consultative Group on Active Living.
What does membership in ICSSPE mean for IAPS members?
IAPS has been part of ICSSPE's network as a member organization since 1995, and officially joined ICSSPE's Associations' Board in September 2000. Membership in the Associations' Board means that IAPS can work with 14 other international organizations to develop the Council's working programme and research agenda and produce policy or position statements regarding sport science and physical education. Moreover, IAPS can play an active role in planning the Pre-Olympic Scientific Congresses held every four years.
All member organizations regularly receive news and publications from ICSSPE, highlighting the latest developments in sport science and physical education from a multi-disciplinary perspective. IAPS may also use ICSSPE as a means of disseminating information to other members of the sport science community (via the Newsletter, ICSSPE Bulletin magazine, Internet site, etc.) Specific benefits of ICSSPE membership include the following:
International contacts and partnerships with other ICSSPE members
Contacts and partnerships with other international associations including the World Health Organisations (WHO), UNESCO, other United Nations organisations, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISFS), the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI), and more.
Research grant opportunities and other financial support through ICSSPE from international organizations and agencies for multi-disciplinary research projects (e.g., IOC, WHO).
Patronage and financial assistance from ICSSPE for publications and conferences.
Access to and participation in the nomination and selection of international awards and honors (e.g., Sport Science Award of the IOC President).
Access to numerous publications including the ICSSPE Bulletin, Sport Science Studies, Perspectives, Vade Mecum- Directory of Sport Science, and other publications.
Access to interdisciplinary conferences and symposia; particularly the Pre-Olympic Scientific Congress.
Access to information via the internet (www.icsspe.org).
Networking opportunities and access to the most current and accurate information about sport science and physical education globally.
Unified voice for advocacy
ICSSPE's strength lies in the diversity of its membership. The complex challenges and opportunities of this century require the collective thinking and efforts of many associations working collaboratively toward a common goal. We should no longer be asking "what's in it for me or my association". Rather, we should be asking "how can I and my organization assist in the common good".
