President's Message -

Heather Reid

Let me begin by thanking everyone who made our 2005 conference in Olomouc, Czech Republic such a success.  Ivo Jirasek and his team were competent and creative hosts.  Danny Rosenberg put together an excellent program that filled three parallel sessions.  Jim Parry presented a rousing keynote speech just hours after stepping off his plane. And Scott Kretchmar humbly accepted a well-deserved distinguished service award.  Sites for the 2006 and 2007 conferences will be announced soon.

I’d also like to thank our outgoing officers for their service and welcome those newly elected.  Doug McLaughlin replaced Cesar Torres on the future sites committee, Deb Vossen and Claudia Pawlenka will be succeeded by Carwyn Jones and Ivo Jirasek as executive members at large, and I will be following Jan Boxill’s inaugural two-year term as president.

My goals as president of IAPS are to increase membership and make the organization more international.  Our membership and conferences have traditionally focused on North America and the U.K., but philosophy of sport is gaining interest worldwide.  That interest should be reflected in IAPS’s membership and activities.  Despite the growth of conference participation and journal submissions, our 2004-05 membership was under100 members with nearly half of the residents in North America.  Racial and gender diversity are also issues.  We need to do what we can not only to attract a larger, more diverse membership but also to engage them actively in scholarly exchange.

Groundwork for both of these goals has already been laid.  IAPS plans a more active role in the International Philosophy (FISP) and Sports Studies (ICSSPE) organizations with which we are affiliated.  We are also exploring ways for regional and national philosophy of sport associations to be officially affiliated with us; we have recently been contacted by a group in Nairobi.

Starting this spring, IAPS will be sponsoring a session at the Central Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association, and we hope to do the same at the 2008 World Congress of Philosophy in Korea and the quadrennial ICSSPE conference to be held the same year in China.  We also plan to sanction more regional conferences, which will provide additional scholarly opportunities beyond our globetrotting annual conference.

All of these events will be great opportunities to make colleagues aware of our organization and to recruit members.  We are currently developing a flyer that members can distribute at these and other scholarly events.  Online payment has streamlined the membership process considerably.  It has also been suggested that we require or at least provide incentives for conference participants to join or renew their membership at the time they pay their conference fees.

The 2006 IAPS Conference will be held at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, September 14 and 17, 2006.  Make sure and plan accordingly and get your paper into the CALL FOR PAPERS.

These goals can only be achieved if those of us close to IAPS make a grassroots effort to promote it.  Anyone planning on attending the APA, WCP, or ICSSPE meetings please let us know and consider chairing an IAPS session there.  Please also consider distributing the new flyer at other conferences you might attend.  Finally, don’t hesitate to contact any of us on the executive board with input or ideas you might have on affiliation of related organizations and sanctioning of regional conferences.

Secretary's Message

Heather Sheridan

The general situation of the Association is good.  Membership is up from last year, currently standing at 93.  Current bank balance stands at $14,254.31 (see budget report).  Most significantly, expenditure has not exceeded our income over the year.

Membership is up 14 members from 79 to 93.  Unfortunately, 9 members in 2003/4 failed to renew in 2004/5.  There are only 23 female members, although this is up 12 women(11 members in 2003/4).  Male membership is 70, up 2 (68 members in 2003/4).  The online method of paying has been successful.  There has been no negative feedback from any members, nor have there been any technical difficulties.  The majority of members are now paying their subscriptions online by the fixed annual due date of October 1st.  Paying on time really does ensure that the journal goes out promptly to everyone.

The figures in the budget report are as accurate as they can be given the information that was available to work with.  The most significant point to note is that our expenditure ($4,111.75) has not exceeded our income ($4,901.60).  I have ensured that funds in the UK bank account now get interest paid on them (on the last working day of each month).  From September 29, 2004-September 12, 2005 the account has accrued $158.58 at an interest rate of 2%. World Pay (online provider) will deduct their annual fee of $291.88 from our account with them on 7th October, 2005.

Journal fees and hence subscription fees will remain the same for 2005/06 although I have tweaked the Japanese Yen fees because of changes in the exchange rates.

I now have accurate email addresses for all members.  I have done my best to reply to questions, queries, and requests as soon as I hear from members and prospective members.  I have endeavoured to keep the membership up to date with news/info via the email membership list, sportphil listserv and the Newsletter.

Our annual membership fee ($267.41) to ICSSPE has been renewed for 2005.  I have passed on information to the membership list as and when I receive it.

The transition to JPS's new online submission system through Manuscript Central at  <http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hk_jps> has gone very smoothly.  Several papers have moved efficiently through the revision process on the new site, which is now used by the vast majority of contributors. An online submission system is ideal for an international organization like IAPS, and I urge you all to use MC for your future submissions to JPS

JPS Call for Papers

Special section in JPS Vol. XXXIII, Issue 2 (October 2006), Topic: Olympic Philosophy Submission Deadline: March 15, 2006:   Guest Editor: Heather L. Reid, Dept. of Philosophy, Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa.

Papers are welcome on any philosophical issues pertaining to the Olympic Games and Olympic Movement.  Topics may range from philosophical inspirations for ancient Greek athletics or for the 19th c. Olympic revival, to social and political aspects of the modern Olympic movement, and ethical issues in Olympic sport.  All potential contributors should endeavor to articulate the philosophical ideas distinctive of the modern Olympic movement, including, but not limited to, Olympism. Interested authors should follow the standard JPS guidelines for submissions, except that they should submit their papers directly to guest editor Heather Reid at <reid@morningside.edu>, not to Nicholas Dixon and not through the online submission system.

IAPS Dues On Line

IAPS  website www.iaps.net has been updated to provide members with the option of paying membership fees online.  Membership fees are due on October 1.  Please renew your membership.

Go to the membership page and click on the link to the online secure payment page.  The fee for each membership category is listed in UK Sterling, US Dollars, and Japanese Yen.  The site currently trades only in Pounds Sterling.  This means that when you make your payment the amount will only be shown in Sterling.  Your bank statement should show the amount debited from your account in the currency your bank account operates in.

A small handling charge has been added on to each payment.  These charges are unavoidable.  They go to World Pay for handling the transaction.   It is a flat rate for paying by debit card.  The credit card charge depends on the membership category fee.

When you hit 'Make Payment' you should receive immediate confirmation of the transaction by email: the amount, type of membership, etc.  At the same time, IAPS secretary Heather Sheridan and I will receive a similar email (but not your credit or debit card details) so that membership records can be updated..

If you do experience any difficulties, spot any peculiarities, have any questions or ideas for improvement, please email Heather at hsheridan@glos.ac.uk

Finally, please note that if you do not want to renew your membership online then the option remains to continue paying with the old method by check.  Full instructions are on the websit

A Memorable 2005 IAPS Conference

Danny Rosenberg ,  2005-06 IAPS Conference Chair

The 33rd annual IAPS conference, held in September and hosted by the  Faculty of Physical Culture at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic was a tremendous success. Not only was the academic  program  stimulating, but the pre-conference tour of Prague was outstanding, as well as the social activities that were arranged in Olomouc.

As expected, our keynote speaker Jim Parry gave a thought- provoking address on drugs and supplements. Over 40 paper presentations were delivered and an  interesting panel session on Olympic philosophy was held. The conference was also a wonderful opportunity to learn about the research interests and  contributions of our colleagues in the Czech Republic and other central and  eastern European countries. In addition to the lively scholarly exchanges,  what made this year's meeting most memorable were the cultural sites, the  planned activities, and being in the company of good friends.

None of this event would have been possible without the hard work and  dedication of the site organizers. Sincere appreciation is extended to Ivo, Ales, Irena, Milos, Michal, David, Martin, Martin K., Romana,  Katka, Lud  K., Jirka, Jirka P., Lumír, Vasek, Jessica, and several other students  for their efforts. Not only did they coordinate the academic program, a  casino night, physical activities, a banquet with live music and dancing,  they organized site-seeing excursions and a concert in Prague and  arranged transportation to and from Olomouc and the accommodations in both cities. All this was truly a remarkable feat.

The bar was set high by our Czech colleagues for next year's conference, which will hopefully continue the wonderful atmosphere and spirit of  this year's  gathering.
