  11. About IAPS and Executive Board

President's Message -

Jan Boxill, President

I imagine everyone is well into their school term, and for some nearing the end of it.  Let me start by saying what a wonderful IAPS conference we had at Fort Worth, Texas. Thanks so much for everyone who made it run so smoothly and for setting up such a quality conference.  Special thanks to Spencer Wertz, the on site coordinator and Heather Reid, Conference Chair.  The site was a perfect set up and the facility had much to offer us.  Also thanks to Spencer for the great barbeque at his mini-ranch.  The bus trip gave us an unexpected site seeing tour, but it was worth it.   Heather, thanks for arranging the conference.  The papers were of high quality, they provided stimulating discussion, and their arrangements worked out very well.  So thanks to Heather and her committee for the organization, but even more thanks goes to the participants.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the IAPS Executive Committee for being so prepared and for putting in the long hours of meeting time so that the general business meeting would go smoothly.  Both meetings were indicative of how colleagues can work together well. I especially want to thank Sharon Stoll for all her help. Her knowledge of IAPS was incredibly helpful to me and the committee.  I am honored to be a part of this organization of  talented and congenial people who thrive on intellectual competition in a mutual challenge to achieve excellence—to use Bob Simon’s phrase!  But I am even more honored to serve as the President of the organization.

Some matters of importance that appear in the Business Meeting minutes:

 1. Method of payment of IAPS dues.  Secretary-Treasurer Heather Sheridan researched several options to make paying our dues easier.  Given that currencies are not easily exchangeable, we needed a method accessible by all.  After careful consideration and discussion by the Executive Committee, the World Pay method seemed to be most feasible for our organization.  Heather will be setting this up. Keep in mind that IAPS dues coincide with the IAPS year-October to October.

 2. IAPS Conference 2005:  There was a great deal of discussion about next year’s conference site.  We had a proposal from Dennis Hemphill to hold the conference in Melbourne in conjunction with the Commonwealth Conference March 2006.  But this posed many problems both for the members and for our organization.  As the minutes show, the members agreed that we should participate in this Conference, something akin to our participation in the Pre-Olympic Congress, but should hold our annual meeting as usual in September/October.  The tentative site for the 2005 IAPS annual meeting and conference is Prague, in September or October. Future sites chair, Cesar Torres, is seeking confirmation and information will be forthcoming as soon as this is finalized.

3. The JPS is thriving under the editorship of Nick Dixon.  The on-line method of submissions and reviews is a great help in getting articles reviewed and published. Thanks Nick for all your work; it is reflected in a first-rate Journal.

Congratulations on our new Executive Committee members and officers.  Thank you for your willingness to work to continue the success of IAPS.  And speaking of the success of our organization, there were two Distinguished Scholars chosen to receive the award—Bob Simon and Bernard Suits.  Unfortunately neither was able to be in Fort Worth to receive their plaques, but I wish to congratulate them both, and invite each of them to present a Warren P. Fraleigh Distinguished Scholar Lecture at next year’s conference.

For those who were unable to attend the conference at Fort Worth, you were missed, and I hope many of you can make the 2005 Conference. A call for papers will be forthcoming very soon, so start working on them now.  For those who did attend, I want to thank you all for your part in making this a very successful conference. It was great to reconnect with old friends and also to meet new ones.  I hope to see you all at the next year.

Again, I would like to thank you for allowing me to serve as your president.  I look forward to serving again this year with the continuing and new members of the Executive Committee and for all the members in sustaining the vitality of IAPS.

Finally, a call for elections will be forthcoming very soon.  I urge you all to think seriously about nominating yourself and/or others for the various committees and offices. The duties of these are in the Constitution, but also will be posted in the Newsletter. The success of IAPS depends on your willingness to take an active role in it.

IAPS Conference September 16-19

Our 32nd Annual conference was held at the Fort Worth DFW Lakes Executive Hotel in Grapevine, Texas, with approximately 80 people attending. We had dinner at a great barbeque on Thursday, a sumptuous spread at the Wertz mini ranch on Friday, and a wonderful banquet on Saturday - perhaps a little too much food :-)  A big Texas hug to Spencer Wertz for a great experience and to his wife Linda for putting up with us at their home. The best part about conferences are renewing friendships, building new friendships, as well as, being stimulated by thoughtful papers and reflection about the meaningful work of our peers around the world.  It is always a joy to get together.  Abstracts for the conference can be found at: http://www.iaps.net, click on Conferences.  Check out Heather Sheridian's information on the executive and business meeting, as well as the budget report.

            Call for Papers
Special section within JPS Vol. XXXII, Issue 2 (October 2005)
Topic: Sport and Disability
Submission Deadline: March 15, 2005
Guest Editor: Leslie Francis, Dept. of Philosophy, University of Utah

Papers are welcome on any philosophical issues pertaining to sport and disability.  Metaphysical questions about the nature of disability and ethical analysis of sport for people with disabilities are of central interest.  However, potential contributors could also consider the relationship between issues of disability and mechanical or chemical enhancements for athletes.  Interested authors should follow the standard JPS guidelines for submissions, except that they should submit their papers directly to guest editor Leslie Francis at <francisl@LAW.UTAH.EDU>, not to Nicholas Dixon and not through JORS.

3.   We continue to welcome general submissions on any area of the philosophy of sport.  The preferred method of submission is online, via the web site at http://www.humankinetics.com/jors/.  We also accept papers sent in hard copy and request that authors submit four copies if they use this method.

Philosophical Perspectives on the Social Critique of Sport
Edge Hill College of Higher Education
Ormskirk, Lancashire
Friday 21st January, 2005

The social critique of sport has taken many forms. Marxist and neo-Marxist sociologists of sport have claimed that sport is a reflection of capitalism (Beamish, Brohm, Hoch and Rigauer), an Ideological State Apparatus producing false consciousness (Brohm), and a site of counter-hegemonic struggle (Gruneau, Hargreaves and Tomlinson). Critiques of sport as a site of inequality and struggle over identity in relation to gender (Messner) and ethnicity (Carrington) have dominated social scientific literature on sport. It has also been argued that sport has been subject to degradation (Lasch). Recent scholarship in the ethics of sport has considered central themes in the critique of sport such as gene technology (Miah, Munthe and Tamburrini), the role of the coach (Brackenridge and Fry), the nature and roles of the sports sciences (McNamee) and sports medicine (Howe and Waddington), nationalism and patriotism (Dixon and Gomberg), the logic of progress (Loland) and elitism (Tännsjö).

While much of this work has been critical of the forms taken by modern sport, many scholars defend the nature of sport in the face of such criticism. This meeting will take the social critique of sport as a general theme.

Papers are invited that speak both for and against the modern social formations of sport.  The whole spectrum of philosophical and social theoretical perspectives will be welcomed.

Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail to Dr. Leon Culbertson, BPSA Study Group Convenor (culbertl@edgehill.ac.uk), by Monday 13th December 2004. Notification of acceptance of abstracts will be given by Friday 18th December 2004. A programme will be posted to the web site by Monday 20th December 2004. Copies of abstracts will be circulated to attendees in advance.

If you are not planning to submit an abstract but would like to reserve a place at the meeting, or if you require further information about this first study group meeting, please e-mail Leon Culbertson at culbertl@edgehill.ac.uk.
