President's Message -

Danny Rosenberg

Greetings everyone,

It has been a busy several months since the last newsletter and there are a number of items that require our attention in the months ahead.

The most urgent matter we have been dealing with is the new association membership services contract with Human Kinetics and the implementation of the online payment system. While the system was completed at the end of January, when tested by members of the Executive Council there were a few glitches that needed to be corrected. I am pleased to announce that the online payment system is now up and running, a mass e-mail notice will have been sent to the membership explaining how to access the system, and the system will be posted at the IAPS website shortly. I want to thank Doug McLaughlin who was instrumental in this task. Members will still have the option to register and renew their membership by phone, mail or fax by referring to the new registration form. I urge everyone to visit the online site at: http://www.humankinetics.com/associationmanagement/index.cfm?assocID=2

Please remain in good standing and encourage others to join our association.

IAPS is now formally affiliated with the American Kinesiology Association (AKA) and I would like to thank Scott Kretchmar for initiating this relationship. The AKA will soon distribute its first electronic newsletter and I submitted a piece describing the purpose and nature of IAPS. When the newsletter is out the link to it will be made available to the membership.

I am delighted to inform you that Mike McNamee’s proposed symposium entitled, “For and Against WADA: Contemporary Issues in the Ethics of Anti-Doping” was accepted for the 2008 ICSEMIS Convention (formerly the Pre-Olympic Congress) in China,  and that Sigmund Loland will deliver a keynote address at the Convention. Congratulations to both of them and for promoting IAPS at this venue.

Unfortunately Ben Letson was unable to organize an IAPS session at the 2008 World Congress of Philosophy in Korea (the latter due to our affiliation with FISP). By the time Ben made contact with the organizing committee a deadline had passed. If there are any individual IAPS members attending the Congress, please let us know about your involvement.

Heather Reid coordinated and chaired an IAPS session at the Eastern Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association (APA), Baltimore MD on December 29, 2007 which featured four speakers:  Stephen Schmid, Joan Grassbaugh, Daniel Dombrowski, and Richard Dean.  The two-hour time slot had excellent attendance, the discussion was lively, and Heather made announcements about IAPS and JPS.  She has also graciously agreed to organize the next IAPS session at the Eastern APA which will be held in Philadelphia at the end of this year. Please note and respond to the call for papers for this event.

Jeffrey Fry organized and will chair an IAPS session at the Central Division APA meeting in Chicago on April 19, 2008. The four presenters will be: Michael Austin, Heather Reid, Nicholas Dixon and Jeffrey Fry. We look forward to hearing about this event. These sessions at divisional APA meetings do not cost IAPS anything and they raise the visibility of our organization and our field. Thanks for all your hard work Heather and Jeff and to all the IAPS participants.

Plans for the 2008 IAPS conference in Tokyo, September 10-15, are advancing nicely. I would like to remind the membership that the deadline for submission of abstracts is April 1, 2008. If you haven’t done so, please get your abstract in soon.

The host site will be Tokyo Metropolitan University and reasonable limited accommodations will be made available at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center. A special feature this year is the joint nature of the meeting together with the Japan Society for the Philosophy of Sport and Physical Education which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The program, social excursions and interaction with our Japanese colleagues promise to make this year’s conference a memorable one. For further information go to: http://wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp/jspspe/iaps/index.html

A recommendation for the 37th annual IAPS conference in 2009 will soon be forwarded to the Executive Council by the Honors, Awards and Future Sites Committee. The Council will study and discuss the recommendation at its next meeting and the item will be placed on the AGM agenda in Tokyo. Thank you and good luck to those who submitted proposals. Stay tuned for more details about the 2009 conference in a future newsletter.

Finally, I would like to issue a call for nominations for the upcoming elections that will require two Members at Large to serve a two-year term. The success of IAPS relies on the strength and diversity of its leadership. If you would like to serve, please contact Terry Roberts, the Elections chair. Also, nominations for the Distinguished Service Award and the Warren P. Fraleigh Distinguished Scholar Lecture are open. We have many fine individuals who have contributed to the organizational health of IAPS over the years, as well as many exceptional researchers. Please consider nominating and recognizing your colleagues for their outstanding achievements by contacting members of the Honors, Awards and Future Site Committee, Doug Mclaughlin, Charlene Weaving or Milan Hosta.

The last few months have been an important transition period. As you can tell, progress is being made in several areas as IAPS continues to remain in the forefront of promoting sport philosophy throughout the world. On that global note, I look forward to seeing many of you in Tokyo!
