President's Message -

Heather Reid

Greetings to all.

I’m just back from the Olympic Games in Torino; a wonderful experience.  What has struck me most, however, has been the reaction back here on campus.  Before I left, the local newspaper did an extensive article on my work and I gave a college presentation on Olympic ideals.  Since my return, students and colleagues have been stopping by my office to tell me how much they’ve learned watching coverage of the Games.  They point out the courage of fallen figure skaters who finished their programs, the petulance of certain stars who’ve lost all perspective, the magnanimity of the medalist who donated his bonus money to Right to Play, and the spectacle of athletic friendship in the face of political enmity. These are people who watch sport all the time, but seem for the first time to be viewing it with a critical—might I say philosophical—eye.  The experience reminds me of the power of our scholarship to improve the social and educational value of sport in our world.

Getting back to business, let me begin with some conference news.  I am happy to announce that Bob Simon and Scott Kretchmar have agreed to give Warren Fraleigh Distinguished Scholar lectures at September’s annual meeting in Niagara Falls.  In addition, IAPS members will receive a discount on conference fees as an incentive to join or to renew memberships.  Conference organizer Danny Rosenberg has been doing a great job with preparations and he assures me that the conference website will be up soon.  I hope you all will plan to attend what promises to be an excellent meeting.  In other news, Slovenia has been chosen as the site for our 2007 conference.

In the less distant future, IAPS will be holding a special session at the Central Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association on April 27, 2006, 9AM-Noon at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, Illinois.  Bill Morgan, Nick Dixon, and Jeff Fry will be presenting papers on sports ethics with Jan Boxill chairing and commenting.  For the APA Eastern Division meeting to be held December 27-30, 2006, at the Marriott Wardman Hotel in Washington, D.C., the IAPS session will feature papers chosen from an open call, found elsewhere in this newsletter.  It is our sincere hope that these sessions will not only provide additional opportunities for our members, but also draw new scholars into our field.

To further assist such efforts, a new downloadable flyer and three-fold brochure are being designed to distribute at meetings.  Eventually these materials will be available for any member to download and print up.  We will also have copies printed professionally and available for members to take to conferences.  In journal news, abstracts translated into French, Spanish, German, and Japanese will appear on the IAPS web site beginning with the May 2006 issue.  Meanwhile, the Executive has nominated John Russell to take over as editor of JPS. This nomination will require approval from the membership as part of our 2006 elections.

Other Executive offices up for election this year include Conference Chair, Elections Chair, and two members at large.  I urge outgoing officers and newcomers alike to consider serving in one of these positions.  I think we all would like to see an internationally diverse Executive Committee.  Nominations should be sent in the near future to current Elections Chair, Terry Roberts.

IAPS Dues On Line

IAPS  website www.iaps.net has been updated to provide members with the option of paying membership fees online.  Membership fees are due on October 1 of each year.  Please renew your membership.

Go to the membership page and click on the link to the online secure payment page.  The fee for each membership category is listed in UK Sterling, US Dollars, and Japanese Yen.  The site currently trades only in Pounds Sterling.  This means that when you make your payment the amount will only be shown in Sterling.  Your bank statement should show the amount debited from your account in the currency your bank account operates in.

A small handling charge has been added on to each payment.  These charges are unavoidable.  They go to World Pay for handling the transaction.   It is a flat rate for paying by debit card.  The credit card charge depends on the membership category fee.

When you hit 'Make Payment' you should receive immediate confirmation of the transaction by email: the amount, type of membership, etc.  At the same time, IAPS secretary Heather Sheridan and I will receive a similar email (but not your credit or debit card details) so that membership records can be updated..

If you do experience any difficulties, spot any peculiarities, have any questions or ideas for improvement, please email Heather at hsheridan@glos.ac.uk

Finally, please note that if you do not want to renew your membership online then the option remains to continue paying with the old method by check.  Full instructions are on the websit

2006 IAPS Conference

The 34th Annual IAPS Conference for 2006 will be held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada between Thursday, September 14th and Sunday, September 17th at the Doubletree Resort Lodge and Spa, a Hilton Hotel affiliate. This venue will combine the accommodations and conference in a single facility and provide delegates a wonderful opportunity to visit one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Not only are there many great sites to see in and around the Falls, including two world-class casinos, but the region offers many exciting excursions and places of interest. All those planning to attend the annual meeting are encouraged to extend their stay to fully enjoy their visit.

Conference plans include a book display, opening reception with prizes, Bob Simon and Scott Kretchmar as the prospective keynote speakers, and a conference banquet. The program itself will feature an array of sport philosophers from around the world who will address a variety of interesting and provocative topics.

The 2006 Conference will be hosted by the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at Brock University from nearby St. Catharines, Ontario. Danny Rosenberg will serve as the Conference Chair and head the Site Organizing Committee. You should find the conference registration form and hotel reservation request form on the IAPS website, as well as webpage links for general hotel information, transportation from and to Toronto and Buffalo airports, and attractions in Niagara Falls.

For now, please submit your abstracts before the April 1 deadline and mark your calendar so you arrive in Niagara Falls, Canada, September 14th to 17th 2006, for what should be a spectacular and inspiring IAPS meeting.

The conference in 2006 will be in a great, great place.  Niagara Falls, CA.  What a treat for all of us, especially if you have never been to that part of the world.  Danny Rosenberg has sent e notices and forms that include a second call for papers (the deadline is APRIL 1), the conference registration form, and the hotel reservation request form.   He tells us that the online payment system is not yet up and running, but it should be shortly, and we will receive further details about accessing the system. Danny tells us that we MUST use the attached hotel reservation request form to receive the special room rate. The form may be completed and sent electronically to the hotel directly. DO NOT make your reservation via the hotel website and DO NOT send the completed hotel reservation form to Danny.

All of those CAPS  mean business - let's not mess us.  Follow directions accordingly.
