I’m pleased to report that the on-line method of paying subscriptions - introduced in November 2004 – is being used. 5 members have used it to join IAPS for the first time and 13 have used it to renew their subs. All the feedback I’ve had from those using it has been positive – quick and easy to use. If anyone has any suggestions for improving the membership pages please contact me at hsheridan@glos.ac.uk
You should all receive your copy of the JPS by the end of April/early May. If your address has changed since you last received a copy now is the time to let me know so that I can make sure it’s sent to your new address.
If anyone has any news about conferences, seminars, or any other events or activities going in your area, please email me with details and I’ll make sure they get put on the website and/or circulated amongst all the members.
In accordance with Article VI of the
Association's Constitution, The Honors, Awards, and Future Sites Committee is
inviting the membership to nominate candidates for the following awards:
-
-
-
In identifying candidates consider qualities and experiences that make these scholars suitable for the award for which they are being nominated. Keep in mind that for the Distinguished Scholar Award the nominees must have contributed eminent manuscripts to the philosophic literature concerning sport for at least five years and need not be a member of the Association. For the IAPS Distinguished Service Award the nominees must have made sustained and meaningful contributions to the Association through active participation and leadership. The nominees must have contributed to the Association for at least ten years and must have been a member for at least the same number of years. Please include the nominee's name, affiliation, address, phone number, the award for which he or she is being nominated, and a brief description of the rationale for the nomination. Send your nominations to Cesar Torres by May 1, 2005at: crtorres@brockport.edu
Nominations are now open for a number of vacancies on the IAPS Executive Council and for one vacancy on the Honors, Awards and Future Sites Committee. The vacancies occur in the following positions:
· President (one position)
· Members-at-Large (two positions)
· Honors, Awards and Future Sites Committee (one position)
Nominations must satisfy a number of conditions:
Handy Hint: The easiest way to complete the nomination is for the nominator to copy the original nomination email to both the seconder and the nominee who can then use ‘reply all’ to acknowledge acceptance and attach the brief biography.
Once the nomination is complete, Terry Roberts will forward an email to the nominator, seconder and nominee. Please be diligent in fully completing the nomination process, as he will not chase people to remind them to complete the various components that comprise a complete nomination.
Volume 32(1) of JPS is set for on-time publication in May. It is a bumper issue, containing 8 articles and 2 reviews. Volume 32(2), which will appear in October, will contain a special section on sport and disability, guest edited by Leslie Francis, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Utah. Another special section, on the Olympics and philosophy, is tentatively scheduled for 33(2) in October 2006, with Professor Heather Reid of Morningside College as guest editor. Some open slots remain for 32(2), so I urge you to submit your recent work.
After consultation with members of the JPS editorial review board, I have decided to comply with Human Kinetics' request that we switch to a new online review system. I had been quite happy with the current online review system, JORS, especially since increasing numbers of authors were using it, but Human Kinetics was having trouble with JORS, because it did not meet the needs of some of its other journals. The new system, Manuscript Central (MC), is a professional journal submission web site, whereas JORS was Human Kinetics' own "in house" system. MC is more powerful than JPS requires, but it has some distinct advantages, including greater flexibility in customizing the system to make it suitable for JPS and 24 hour telephone support for authors experiencing difficulties submitting papers. The almost unanimous verdict of review board members who "test drove" MC was that it's more complicated than JORS, but not too complicated.
The new Manuscript Central JPS web site is up and running at <http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hk_jps>. I invite you to visit the site and take a look. Better yet, please use it to submit a paper! (JORS will be maintained for a brief transitional period, so that we can move all the current papers through the system, but will thereafter be discontinued.)

IAPS website www.iaps.net has been
updated to provide members with the option of paying membership fees online.
Go to the membership page and click on the link to the online secure payment
page. The fee for each membership category is listed in UK Sterling, US
Dollars, and Japanese Yen. The site currently trades only in Pounds
Sterling. This means that when you make your payment the amount will only be
shown in Sterling. Your bank statement should show the amount debited from
your account in the currency your bank account operates in.
A small handling charge has been added on to each payment. These charges are
unavoidable. They go to World Pay for handling the transaction. It is a
flat rate for paying by debit card. The credit card charge depends on the
membership category fee.
When you hit 'Make Payment' you should receive immediate confirmation of the
transaction by email - the amount, type of membership, etc. At the same time,
IAPS secretary Heather Sheridan. I will receive a similar email (but not your
credit or debit card details) so that membership records can be updated..
If you do experience any difficulties, spot any peculiarities, have any
questions or ideas for improvement, please email Heather at hsheridan@glos.ac.uk
Finally, please note that if you don't want to renew your membership online
then the option remains to continue paying with the old method by cheque.

International Conference Movement - The ART of Life II. September 19 - 21, 2005 Faculty of Physical Education and SportsThe main topic of the international annual conference Movement – the Art of Life is movement from the philosophical point of view, from the grounds of philosophy as well as other disciplines. The aim is to work in long term on one topic, so that all participants are encouraged to work on their texts into depth as well as to follow the depth of the thoughts of their colleagues. Like this we wish to avoid the frequent need of changing one’s topics (and thus also the depth) for every new conference. Everyone involved is meant to study one topic into depth, so the choice of his/her topic is very important, and it can coincide with individual long-term interests.
The first conference Movement – the Art of Life I took place in September 2004, however as it takes some time to establish coherent group of people it is still open to new participants. The conference takes place annually, usually in September – the exact time is chosen according to other events.
Conference language: English
There will be proceedings printed after every conference, so that the involved people can have time enough to read the articles of their colleagues and thus ask wise questions during the following conference. There will be time of one month after the conference to send us the final version of the contribution to print. The proceedings will be reviewed with respect to how the comments from the conference have been worked up into the text. The proceedings will be published in English language, but each participant will be responsible for his/her level of English.
We are trying to keep the costs as low as possible. There is no fee for the actual conference, however the conference kit (i.e. abstracts and proceedings) costs 20 EURO to cover the publishing costs. The rest of the costs is up to the participant. Concerning accommodation you can write to the organising committee or you can choose it from: http://www.praha.cz/
If you would like to participate, please send us till the end of June 1st 2005:
· Your name and surname · Place of work · Position at your faculty and the subjects you teach/study · The topics of your interest you have worked at so far · The topic you have chosen as suitable for the conference · Short abstract of your presentation (150-300 words) · Bibliography (i.e. main books that you might be using for your work) · Main publicationsFor last-year participants, it is necessary to send only abstracts and the update of the above given points. We intend to present all the information to the other participants at the beginning of the conference so that we know one another more. Please send us the information till the end of June 1st 2005. In case of need it is possible to add your preferred day and time of the day for your presentation. If you have any objections or suggestions, please inform us as soon as possible.

Conference Report from ICSSPESport should use its Socio-political influence
International Conference in Bad Boll, Germany, Documents Success in
Development Work
Participants of the International Forum Sport and Development, held from
February 13 to 15, 2005 in Bad Boll, Germany, examined ways to optimise
cooperation in sport on the basis of different projects in development.
"Though there needs to be comprehensive scientific monitoring of sport
development projects, there is enough evidence of how practical development
work should occur, that is well-suited to the needs of each party involved",
explained UN Special Adviser Adolf Ogi and ICSSPE President Gudrun Doll-Tepper
who led the conference, in cooperation with Reverend Volker Steinbrecher at
the Evangelische Akademie Bad Boll.
Gudrun Doll-Tepper verified this message with presentation of successfully
implemented measures, such as the promotion of girls' football in regions of
Honduras with high crime rates. Social worker and film director Erika Harzer
documented this project in a film that will be part of the official cultural
programme of the FIFA World Cup 2006. Further, Gudrun Doll-Tepper mentioned a
development project by member of German parliament Reinhold Becker, which
offers the opportunity for students to work in Namibia as part of their
university studies.
During the conference, Parliamentary Secretary of State in the German Ministry
of the Interior, Ute Vogt, reminded participants that the German Government
has given 700 000 EUR for projects to be conducted in the context of the 2005
International Year of Sport and Physical Education. Rainer Brechtken, member
of the president's committee of the National Olympic Committee for Germany (NOK),
which, together with the German Sports Confederation (DSB) was another partner
to the conference, emphasised that the ministry for economic cooperation and
development needs to partner with agencies for cooperation and added that
sport needs to be an integral part of development collaboration. DSB
Vice-President Christa Thiel discussed how different parts of the world are
moving closer together in light of the flood disaster in Southeast Asia and
pointed out measures to support sport for girls and women in Afghanistan,
which the DSB was a partner to. IOC member Thomas Bach warned what a
n overestimation of the influence of sport on world politics might have. There
was consensus in the discussion that the persons responsible in sports,
science, politics and media should use the International Year of Sport and
Physical Education to strengthen the opportunities to use sport for
development, health, education and peace.
Representatives of different religions, sports and sport sciences from
approximately 20 countries attended the event, on invitation from the
Evangelische Akademie Bad Boll and the International Council of Sport Science
and Physical Education (ICSSPE).
