President's Message -

Jan Boxill, President

With the 2005 IAPS Conference just a few short months away, here’s hoping that all of you in the northern hemisphere are enjoying your summer; and those in the southern hemisphere your winter. Thanks to Danny Rosenberg (Conference Chair) and Ivo Jirasek (On-Site Organizer) the conference looks to be another high-level program covering a wide range of topics.

During the past year, several things were brought to IAPS to be addressed.

First we had a request to endorse the Panathlon Declaration on Ethics in Youth Sport. This declaration represents a commitment to go beyond discussion and to establish clear rules of conduct in the pursuit of the positive values in youth sport. Panathlon International is the non-governmental, non-profit-making, non-political association, without sex or racial distinction, of all Panathlon Clubs (300 in 20 countries).

Second, you will recall that in our general meeting in Texas, IAPS did not endorse CISC for its annual meeting in 2006, but did endorse the staging of a regional meeting at the Commonwealth International Sport Conference (CISC) 9-12 March 2006. Prior to that meeting there will be the International Sport Studies Conference (ISSC) will play host to the Biennial Conference of the International Society for Comparative PE and Sport, and is seeking the involvement of other associations for regional meetings, including IAPS, the International Sport Sociology Association, the Australian Society for Sport History, a Football Studies association, plus several Olympic Studies Centres.  Dennis Hemphill requested permission for the following: 1) to cite the IAPS endorsement of the ISSC conference as a regional meeting of IAPS, 2) to use the IAPS logo in any ISSC advertising, 3) to advertise ISSC through the IAPS website, and 4) to link the IAPS website to the ISSC conference website. Since this was fully discussed and endorsed at our meeting, permission was granted.

Third, I was approached by the office of Chris Richardson, Senior Acquisitions Editor for Sage Publications' STM journal program, to inquire whether IAPS would be interested in discussing a publishing partnership with them to publish the Journal of the Philosophy of Sport.  Sage is aware that APS currently publishes the journal with Human Kinetics Publishing, Inc., but in the event we might be looking for a new publishing partner, Sage would be interested.  Sage Publications is a privately held company located near Los Angeles, with affiliate offices in London and New Delhi. They offer full publishing services including publication management, marketing, indexing & abstracting, commercial sales management, editorial production, manufacturing, electronic accessibility and subscription fulfillment. Last year IAPS renewed its contract with Kinetics Publishing, but this is an interesting proposal that the Executive Committee should discuss to bring to the full membership.

Fourth, many of our members are also members of the American Philosophical Association (APA) and have been interested in having a session devoted to Philosophy in Sport.  For this to take place IAPS needs to be affiliated with each separate division—Eastern, Central and Pacific.  For participation in 2006, affiliation had to be granted in April and the request must come from the President of IAPS who also must be a member of the APA.  Given the time constraints, on behalf of IAPS I requested and received APA Central Division Affiliation.  I made the request also to the Eastern Division, but their deadline for 2006 had passed; the request will be taken up in December 2005 for 2007.  Once the Central Division gave approval, the program committee needed a program almost immediately.  In the interest of time, I asked Jeffrey Fry to coordinate this.  The result is that IAPS will have a session at the Central Division Meeting in Chicago at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel April 26-29, 2006. The topic of the session will be “Sports Ethics” and the presenters will be, Nick Dixon, Bill Morgan, Jeffrey Fry and myself. I personally am excited about our affiliation and hope that IAPS will have a regular presence in all future APA meetings.  This will be discussed more fully at the Executive Committee Meeting and General Membership Meeting.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Olomouc, Czech Republic in September.

It has been my pleasure to serve as President of IAPS for the past two years and hope that my service has been good for IAPS.

Secretary's Message

Heather Sheridan

I’m pleased to report that the on-line method of paying subscriptions - introduced in November 2004 – is being used.  5 members have used it to join IAPS for the first time and 13 have used it to renew their subs.  All the feedback I’ve had from those using it has been positive – quick and easy to use.  If anyone has any suggestions for improving the membership pages please contact me at hsheridan@glos.ac.uk

You should all have received your copy of the JPS by the end of April/early May.  If your address has changed since you last received a copy now is the time to let me know so that I can make sure it’s sent to your new address.

If anyone has any news about conferences, seminars, or any other events or activities going in your area, please email me with details and I’ll make sure they get put on the website and/or circulated amongst all the members.

The due date for 2005/6 subscriptions is 1st October 2005.  The membership renewal form, the facility to pay your subs by credit or debit card, and information about other ways of paying  your subs, is on the website http://www.iaps.net/

If you have any additional agenda items for the forthcoming annual Business Meetings at IAPS, please contact me at hsheridan@glos.ac.uk.

Journal of Philosophy of Sport

Nicholas Dixon, Editor

JPS 32:2 is on schedule for its October 2005 publication date.  It will contain 4 papers in a special section on sport and disability, guest edited by Leslie Francis of the University of Utah, 3 or 4 general papers (depending on space availability), and 2 book reviews.

JPS has officially made the transition from its former online submission system (JORS) to its new one, which is operated by Scholar One's Manuscript Central system.  The web site's url is <http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hk_jps>.  Please note that Human Kinetics inadvertently omitted the "mc" from the middle of this address on the submissions guidelines page of the most recent issue of JPS (32:1).  A major advantage of Manuscript Central (MC) is that, while it is slightly more complex than our old system, it offers telephone support for users for 14 1/2 hours every weekday.  I have already moved several submissions through the review process using MC and it is working very well.  An online submission system is ideal for an international organization like IAPS, and I urge you all to use MC for your future submissions to JPS.

 Call for Papers

Special section in JPS Vol. XXXIII, Issue 2 (October 2006)
Topic: Olympic Philosophy
Submission Deadline: March 15, 2006
Guest Editor: Heather L. Reid, Dept. of Philosophy, Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa.

Papers are welcome on any philosophical issues pertaining to the Olympic Games and Olympic Movement.  Topics may range from philosophical inspirations for ancient Greek athletics or for the 19th c. Olympic revival, to social and political aspects of the modern Olympic movement, and ethical issues in Olympic sport.  All potential contributors should endeavor to articulate the philosophical ideas distinctive of the modern Olympic movement, including, but not limited to, Olympism.

Interested authors should follow the standard JPS guidelines for submissions, except that they should submit their papers directly to guest editor Heather Reid at <reid@morningside.edu>, not to Nicholas Dixon and not through the online submission system.

General Information

2005 IAPS CONFERENCE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC LOOKS FANTASTIC

The 2005 IAPS conference hosted by the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacky University, Olomouc, Czech Republic between September 15 and 18 is shaping up to be a terrific venue and the list of social events is outstanding. The academic program features 49 paper presentations from scholars representing 12 countries, one panel discussion on "Issues in Olympic Philosophy," and the Keynote Address will be delivered by Jim Parry, Leeds University, UK as part of the opening session on the afternoon of Thursday, September 15.

In addition to the scholarly program, Ivo Jirasek, the site convener, has organized a pre-conference tour in the beautiful city of Prague between September 13 and 15. Some of the activities in Prague will include riding on the Vltava river, a concert of Jewish music, and running the trails in the Kresky woods for those so inclined. Please go to the conference webpage to register as soon as possible if you are interested in the Prague excursion. Other social activities are planned once in Olomouc. There will be a Casino Night on Friday evening September 16. Dinner is included and real money will not be used, perhaps this is a disappointment for those hoping to get rich. There are opportunities to participate in a number of leisure workshops including a ropes course, movement games, canoeing on the Morava river and other activities. The conference banquet will be held at Palacky University on Saturday night, September 17. Finally, there will be free time to explore the city of Olomouc and enjoy its culinary and drinking establishments. Those planning to attend the conference are asked to register immediately. Some of the recommended hotels in Olomouc have no available rooms, so you are encouraged to arrange and confirm your accommodation plans as soon as possible. All relevant information may be found at the conference webpage. On behalf of the Program Committee, I do hope many IAPS members, and new participants, can attend this historic conference which is being held in a central European country for the first time. Thanks very much and hope to see all of you in Olomouc in September.

Registration Form for IAPS 2005 Conference

IAPS 2005 Conference Site

The Annual IAPS Conference for 2005 will be held September 15-18, 2005 at Faculty of Physical culture, Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. It would be a pity to go to the Czech Republic and not visit Prague. So there will be the possibility to visit Prague before conference from September 13th. If anyone wishes, accommodations can be arranged, a program, and travel from Prague to Olomouc.

We are looking forward to being in touch with all of you via the registration form and above all to our personal meeting with you in September 2005 in Olomouc.

IAPS Dues On Line

IAPS  website www.iaps.net has been updated to provide members with the option of paying membership fees online.

Go to the membership page and click on the link to the online secure payment page.  The fee for each membership category is listed in UK Sterling, US Dollars, and Japanese Yen.  The site currently trades only in Pounds Sterling.  This means that when you make your payment the amount will only be shown in Sterling.  Your bank statement should show the amount debited from your account in the currency your bank account operates in.

A small handling charge has been added on to each payment.  These charges are unavoidable.  They go to World Pay for handling the transaction.   It is a flat rate for paying by debit card.  The credit card charge depends on the membership category fee.

When you hit 'Make Payment' you should receive immediate confirmation of the transaction by email - the amount, type of membership, etc.  At the same time, IAPS secretary Heather Sheridan. I will receive a similar email (but not your credit or debit card details) so that membership records can be updated..

If you do experience any difficulties, spot any peculiarities, have any questions or ideas for improvement, please email Heather at hsheridan@glos.ac.uk

Finally, please note that if you don't want to renew your membership online then the option remains to continue paying with the old method by cheque.  Full instructions are on the websit
