INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC SUMMIT PROJECT

In preparing for your role at the Economic Summit, as a economic advisor your are to complete the project components below to aid in the task of creating a strategic improvement plan. Each component will be graded and compiled into a research portfolio.

  1. Locate and record the required statistics on the Fact Sheet. State in your own words a definition of each statistic. (ie: population--number of people living within the borders of a country)
     

  2. List and describe the country’s factors of production.
     

  3. What type of economic system exists? (command, market, mixed) Base your answer on who owns and controls the economic resources of the country.
     

  4. List all state-owned or controlled industries and companies. What is the size, in dollars, of the federal budget?
     

  5. What federal programs are in place to care for the needy or less fortunate members of society?
     

  6. What type of products and services are imported and exported?
     

  7. List the import and export totals. What is the monetary unit and its exchange rate with the dollar?
     

  8. List all trade partners and any trade organizations your country participates in.
     

  9. List any countries that your country cannot trade with, due to trade sanctions or bans, and explain why the trade barrier is in place.
     

  10. What is the balance of trade for your country?
     

  11. Describe the country’s infrastructure in terms of roadways, airports, railroads, bridges, and dams.
     

  12. What is the average electricity consumption per citizen?
     

  13. Describe the health care situation within your country. Utilize the statistics from the fact sheet to draw your conclusions.
     

  14. Explain access to education within the country. Is education publicly funded and compulsory?
     

  15. What is the average number of years of education
    obtained per person?
     

  16. How many colleges or universities exist? How are people selected for admission?
     

  17. What colonial influences exist in the country? List any foreign powers that controlled the government of your country.
     

  18. List any countries that your country has controlled. List any significant internal events that have had a profound effect on your country, such as famine, civil war, or depressions.
     

  19. Describe the important cultural events that occur in your country, such as holidays or festivals. Name the most important and influential celebrities.
     

  20. Prepare a colored map of your country and the surrounding area using a sheet of poster board approximately 3 Ft. x 3 Ft. Include physical characteristics, such as rivers, lakes, mountains, plains, valleys, or islands. Label surrounding countries, important cities, harbors, states, or provinces. In addition, label important factors of production using some type of key or legend.
     

  21. Read and summarize one current event per week related to your country.
     

  22. Prepare a typed 5-7 page Standard of Living essay about your country and your efforts at the Economic Summit event. The purpose of your essay is to discuss the standard of living within your country before and after the Summit. The essay must include: an introduction; supporting evidence, including an evaluation of your results at the Economic Summit and the quality of your strategic plan (imports, internal improvements, cash); and a conclusion regarding living standards and international trade.
     

  23. Find the price of a round-trip airfare to your country, both coach and first class. List any stops or plane changes on the way to the capital city of your country from your city.
     

  24. Determine how much it would cost for you to stay and travel for one week within your country. Should include the cost of logging, food, travel, entertainment, and any other expenses you would have to sight see for one week.
