| Visiting Artists The Center for Dance
brings in many top name guest artists each year. Recent guests have included
members of Alvin Ailey
II, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zanes, Diablo Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Pilobolus,
Urban Bush Women; and choreography by Bill Evans, Henning Rübsam, Alan
Senar and Frankie Manning.
2008/2009
This fall the Center for Dance will
welcome Donald K. Shorter Jr. and Germal Barnes from the
Bill T. Jones/Arnie
Zane dance company to restage Arnie Zane's Continuous Replay
for Dance Theatre. This signature work received critical praise
while it was in the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane company repertory.
The project is supported by an American Masterpiece Grant from DanceUSA,
the New England Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for
the Arts.
Clair Porter taught a master class and
performed Namely Muscles. Members of the Urban Bush Women
taught master classes and Juliet McManis taught and performed for Jazz
Festival.
2007
In fall the Center for Dance welcomes
Alan Sener, professor and chair of the dance department at the
University of Iowa. Alan has has presented over 50 dances for The
University of Iowa Department of Dance. Sener teaches improvisation,
choreography and modern dance technique in the tradition of Louis Falco
with whom he performed as a principle dancer as part of the New
York-based Louis Falco Dance Company. He was entrusted with the artistic
direction of the Falco Repertory, a dance legacy with which he continues
to be associated. Sener is active as a freelance choreographer, and
conducts master classes and choreography workshops worldwide. As a
performer and choreographer in film and television, his credits include
seven national commercials, three music videos, two industrial videos
and two feature films.
The Center for Dance will also welcome
BodyVox from Portland for a master class.
2006
In fall the Center for Dance welcomes
Hilary Thomas, artistic director of Lineage Dance, based in the Los
Angeles area. Thomas and company member Tara Mosier will visit UI
in November to set a dance for Dance Theatre. Thomas' athletic
style, as well as her partnering techniques, has pleased audiences
throughout the country. Lineage Dance has been the guest artists
for the past two summer dance workshops at UI. It will be a
delight for students and community members to see her exciting
choreography on the UI dancers.
In spring, 2006, Repertory Dance
Theatre from Utah will be on campus to teach master classes.
2005
Also in fall, Victoria Uris will be on
campus to coach the reconstruction of her dance Breakers for the
fall concert. "Professor Uris has performed with the dance
companies of Paul Taylor, Norman Walker, The New York Dance Collective,
Sandra Neels, Bowyer and Bruggeman, and Rosalind Newman. She has
choreographed more than 50 works for companies including ABT II,
Connecticut Ballet Co., Phoenix Repertory Dance Theatre, Maryland Dance
Theatre, Contemporary Dance Works, and Dayton Contemporary Dance
Company. Her videos have been screened nationally and internationally at
various festivals and on public television and cable stations around the
country. Professor Uris' teaching areas include modern technique,
improvisation, composition, Repertory, videodance and video
documentation of dance".
