Director of the Center for ETHICS*

Sharon K. Stoll, Ph.D.

Dr. Stoll serves as the Director of the Center for ETHICS*.  She is considered one of the leading authorities in competitive moral education intervention techniques for college aged students in America.  Also a professor of Physical Education, Dr. Stoll is a Distinguished Faculty Member and winner of a prestigious University of Idaho Outreach Award in 2000, and a U of I Teaching Award in 1992.  A former public school teacher, coach, and athlete, Dr. Stoll holds a Ph.D. in Sport Philosophy from Kent State University, and is the creator and director of one of the few programs in America that is directed toward moral education with competitive populations.  Dr. Stoll is well known for her knowledge in teaching and methodology as applied to pedagogy in moral education and character development.  Many of Dr. Stoll's students have developed measurement evaluation tools and other curriculum designs that are impacting the knowledge of moral development in sport. 

Author of eight books including, "Who Says It's Cheating?" and "Sport Ethics: Applications for Fair Play", Dr. Stoll is an active lecturer and consultant on various character issues, including moral education, moral reasoning, and moral development. (Curriculum Vita)   She is or has been a consultant for the United States Navy, United States Air Force, the Idaho Bar Association, the American Bar Association, plus various sports organizations, including the President's Commission of the NCAA, the National Youth Sport Coaches' Association, the National Federation of High School Activities Association, and many more independent and private organizations.  In 1993-4, she was in residence at the United States Military Academy at West Point, as a consultant for the Higher Education Program.  Dr. Stoll has been featured on such national programs as "Night Line", "ESPN Sports Center", "ESPN Chat Line", Fox Sports' "Goin' Deep", as well as numerous regional and local news shows as well as documentaries, national newspapers, and magazines.  In 2005, she was featured in over 50 major newspapers in US and abroad describing the Center's latest project working with the Atlanta Braves.  In 2007, she was named as a member of the 100 Most Influential Sport Educators in America with such individuals as Andre Agassi, William Bowen, Bob Costas, Tiger Woods, Pat Summitt, and Mike Krzyzewski.  

Research and Measurement Specialist

Jennifer M. Beller, Ph.D

Dr. Beller, an affiliate faculty member,  is the Research/Measurement Specialist for the Center for ETHICS*.  Dr. Beller is an Associate Professor of Education at neighboring Washington State University.  In her role with the Center, she works directly with Center staff and graduate students to help design, carry out, and implement various research projects in moral reasoning, moral development, character education, and sportsmanship. 

Her specialty is the design and validation of cognitive instruments, where she is one of the principle authors of the Hahm-Beller Values Choice Inventory, and the Rudd-Stoll-Beller-Hahm Values Inventory, and the Stevenson-Stoll Social Responsibility Questionnaire.  She also works extensively as a consultant with faculty, graduate students, and others throughout the world on their research projects in moral reasoning, moral development, and character education.

Dr. Viatcheslav Popovsky is an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Ethics. He is the owner and operator of a scientific/educational company, the Russian- American Physical Culture Institute, focused on assisting people of all ages to develop personal efficacy for life through physical culture activities. 

         Dr. Viatcheslav M. Popovsky is a former Associate Professor and Chief of Pedagogical Practice with the St. Petersburg Lesgaft State Physical Culture Academy named after internationally renowned Russian scientist and pedagog P.F. Lesgaft. As lecturer, researcher and coach, and consultant for elite volleyball teams, Dr. Popovsky is well known within international sport educational circles. He has published over 60 articles and books in his field throughout Russia, Europe, and U.S.

          His role in the Center is to promote increasing international understanding of undergraduate (PEP 310) and graduate (PEP 591) students about efficient pedagogical remedies and multi-disciplinary approaches for achieving athletic, fitness and wellness results through the science of physical culture. In his discussions with students he successfully integrates and combines the best of what both East and West have to offer in the physical culture field. He combines what he learned about the theory and methodology of Physical Culture from the Lesgaft Physical Culture Academy, with what he has learned about it from his research and practice through his firm in America.
