Communicating with Body Language

Objectives:

  • The students will be able to explain the importance of non-verbal communication in the business setting, including body and facial gestures and appearance.

Materials:

  • Web Site:  Introductory information on non-verbal communication.

  • Copies of phrases for Student Activities.

Teaching/Learning Activities:

  1. Discussion on effective non-verbal communication, appearance, business attire, body language, and spatial relationships.

  2. To understand the importance of non-verbal communication:

    •  Discuss the importance of non-verbal communication.

    • Discuss first impressions and appearance.

    • Explain how behavior can influence others.

    • Discuss body language and spatial relationships.

Student Activities:

  1. Gesturing for Meaning.  Give members of the class the phrases below and ask them to act out the gesture for that phrase.  Ask the class to identify the phrase:

  • That’s good

  • Why not?

  • I don’t know

  • I’m pleased

  • Yes

  • Go away

  • Help me please

  • Sit here

  • You fool

  • I don’t like you

  • Speed up

  • Slow down

  • We’re number one!

  • Stop talking

  • Great play!

Now mix up the phrases and ask different students to act them out.

  • Were the gestures the same?

  • Did they enhance the meaning of the message?

  • Did the gestures come automatically?

Discuss the possibility of how easy it may be for someone to misinterpret a gesture or non-verbal cue.

Assessment:

  • Participation in activity.
