Welcome to PTTE 460 Desktop Publishing!

 

This class is an introduction to desktop publishing using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe InDesign CS3. In Desktop Publishing you will learn to edit/create graphic images and use them in the creation of print publications such as magazines, flyers, brochures, etc. In addition to the operation of the software applications, elements of design will be introduced. The textbooks used for the course are the official training manuals for the Adobe Certification program as developed by the staff of Adobe Systems Incorporate.

 

Students from all majors may find the course valuable and are welcome to enroll, however, it is specifically provided for those students majoring in Business & Marketing Education, Technology Education and Business Technology. These students are preparing for careers in education and industry as Business, Marketing or Technology teachers/trainers; the content of this course is often taught in these programs. This is particularly true in business education programs at the secondary and community college level where business technology subjects including graphic design, desktop publishing and website design are often times an integral part of the program of study.

 

Although this course serves as an introduction to graphic design, image manipulation and publication layout, it is important that students already have a solid understanding of information technology concepts and good computer skills in order to be successful! A good basic knowledge of word processing, file management and a basic understanding of the Windows operating system is required before enrolling in this course. Students must have a background in the following:

  • Windows operating system

  • Word processing

  • Digital File Management

  • Software Installation

  • e-mail

The class consists of a variety of activities and lessons provided through the textbooks as well as the completion of a substantial semester project. All text and graphics needed for the book assignments are supplied on a CD-ROM included with the textbook. For the semester project, students will need to create/gather/collect the text and graphics necessary.
